Kia ora e te whānau,

The term is certainly moving at speed. Ngā mihi to our tamariki and kaiako for settling into their classroom programmes and routines.

One of our 2024 goals for “Culture” is that all our tamariki create, know and can recite their pepeha. It has been amazing to see at hui time and assemblies, our tamariki standing tall and reciting their pepeha. Thank you to the whānau who have helped in providing the content. You might like to get your child to recite their pepeha at home to you- the more practise they get, the more confidence they will have.

Our Strategic Plan for 2024/25 and annual implementation plan is nearly complete. The four main pou of Culture, Mātauranga, Environment, and Identity remain the same as well as many of the actions set from 2023.  I will be sending a copy of this out shortly once we finalise the last aspects.

We are noticing quite many students are getting picked up early at the moment( this can often be 15 to 20 mins before hometime). Of course, there will be times when this is necessary, however, the expectation is the tamariki stay until 3 pm each day. Please be mindful of this as the tidying up of the class and closure of the day is important for children to contribute to. Following on from this, if you intend on taking your child away for more than a couple of days, please email the office and principal to let them know.

The new DSS sports tops have been popular with whānau. Around 25 students have purchased their own sports top which when you add the school supply of 70 means we have enough to cover our kura for sporting events in 2024. Another run of these tops, plus hats and hoodies will happen in Term 3.

In a few weeks, all the main corridor windows will be replaced with double-glazed windows which are fit for purpose. The current windows can’t open which creates issues with ventilation. We expect this project to have limited disturbance in the learning areas but it will make a massive difference in terms of aesthetics and health and safety.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the sun!

Ngā mihi mahana

Upcoming events

March the 12th: Year 3-6 Cricket Festival

Late Term 1: Basketball and Year 5/6 Netball Registration:

These are ongoing competitions that run out of school hours each week. Details about when games are played will be sent with the registration form. These teams will need team managers who can support the teams at games.

May 21 – 23rd Junior Tough Guy/Gal Challenge

This is an extreme off-road running event. For years 3/4 it is a 1.5 km run and for years 5/6 it is a 3km course. Some DSS students took part as individuals last year and loved it so it has been suggested that we look at entering a school team. This is an event for kids who love running and the outdoors and don’t mind getting wet, cold and muddy.

It is an entirely optional event and takes place in May on either Tuesday 21st May 2024, Wednesday 22nd May 2024 or Thursday 23rd May 2024.

We will require parent support to enter a school team – please note there is also a $30 fee per child and this will need to be paid before your child is entered. Please fill out the form on Skool Loop if your child is interested.

For more info about the challenge please take a look at their website: https://eventpromotions.co.nz/junior-tough-guy-and-gal-challenge

 Lost Property

The lost property can be found in the corridor outside the library. There are a lot of drink bottles building up here, please come by and check if your child has left something. Named items are usually returned to the owner but most un-named items are donated to charity at the end of the term.

Movin’March – Week 2!

Remember if you walk or wheel we’ll tick off your trip and all entries are sent to Greater Wellington at the end of March (remember you only need at least one trip recorded on your “passport” to enter).  All passports in the WOW Passport Challenge go in the draw to win one of 6 x $400 MYRIDE vouchers.  We have spot prizes to give away too!

Whānau Photo Competition

Post a pic and comment of your whānau having fun on your school journeys under our weekly theme on Facebook, or post and tag us (@movinmarch) on Facebook and be in to WIN 1 of 5 x Micro Scooters (excludes posting “Stories”)!  We’re also giving away 10 Family Passes to Staglands Wildlife Reserve or Zealandia. Check our Movin’March Facebook to see what whānau said about last week’s theme and look for week 4’s theme to be posted on Sunday.

Park & Stride:

If your family lives too far away, why not park a short distance away from the school gate and walk or wheel the rest of the way?  For more information see our Park & Stride tips or try parking on High Street, Thornycroft Ave or Oxford Terrace and using the paths and alleyways to get to the school.

Over the past few weeks, we have been looking at identity and what makes us unique and a key part of that is our Pepeha. In our art, we have created self-portraits as part of the unit. We wanted to show our amazing faces proudly in our artwork. This is to reflect how we feel when we introduce ourselves using our Pepeha. It’s been amazing to see all of the diversity and uniqueness that each child brings to our classroom.
