Kia ora e te whānau,

We are well into our mahi as the days get colder the school grounds become a bit damper. It’s a timely reminder to think about packing jackets, and providing a spare set of clothes in your child’s bag just in case they get wet or muddy.

Our partnership with ERO as part of their external review of our kura is beginning to take shape. Over the last few weeks, we have been gaining further understanding of how this process will unfold. What used to happen was that ERO would visit your school for the week, conduct observations, sight documentation, and meet with staff and board to gain an overall picture of a school’s performance.  A report of their findings would then be published. The new model allows the process to have more time, self-review from the school, and then an agreed improvement plan between ERO and the kura with monitoring steps along the way. As I’ve said previously, this is a good opportunity for us to take stock of where we are at and how we are currently performing as a kura. We will keep you updated in this space as the process moves forward.

It was great to see our tamariki representing our kura at the Inter-school Cross Country on Wednesday. We had a strong, competitive group of runners who looked the part in their new sports tops. Well done to our tamariki who competed and showed a “never give up” spirit. A special mention to Roman Curtis who placed 6th in the Year 5 boys race and will go on to represent our kura at the Interzone Cross Country in June.

Some exciting news is starting to take place on the Outdoor Spaces Plan. We have a couple of Sandpit designs that we will be asking tamariki for some further feedback on. Once this is completed then we will be asking for quotes from contractors and the hope is that by the end of the year, we will have a school sandpit. A big thanks to Bronwyn, Alice Kiefer, Jonny and Emma McRae for supporting this kaupapa. We will look to share the design in the next newsletter.

Finally, a reminder that we have Teacher Only Day next Friday 31st May. School will be closed for instruction so please make alternative childcare arrangements.

Kia pai rā ngā whakatā,

Lee Ewington

Coming Up:

A group of 16 of our year 4-6 students competed at the Zone Cross-Country event. We were fortunate that the weather cleared after some heavy rain in the area.

There was a mixture of nerves and excitement as our year 4s had their first experience of this level of competition. All of our runners showed great perseverance and gave it their all.

We are still awaiting official results but we had some strong finishers who will potentially get to compete at the Lower Hutt Zone event in two weeks.

Lastly, a huge thank you to the whānau who supported transporting students to and from the race and to those who were there to cheer our runners on.

Spare clothes

Please make sure all children year 3 and below have a spare pair of long pants and underpants in their bag every day. We do not have spares in the office for accidents or falls into muddy puddles!

Room 1

This week Room 1 was very busy preparing to host the school assembly. They had listened to the story of Te-Ika-a-Māui in both English and Te Reo Māori. They acted out the story for the whole school and audience to enjoy. This required a lot of executive functioning skills, such as using their memory, self-restraint and controlling their emotions. They also developed their acting and communication skills. Miss Langley was extremely proud of everyone in Room 1 for the amazing job they did at assembly. You were all incredible! A special mention goes to Oscar for his outstanding reading. Such a champion.
