Kia ora e te whānau,

We are only 2 days away from our first performance of “Atua News”. Rehearsals this week have stepped up another level as we have been having whole school run-throughs with staging, lighting and sound all in place. Our tamariki have been hard at work finalising every aspect of their performance. From perfecting their stage presence, acting, and dancing, they are more than ready for the first show on Monday. This production has been student-led in many ways, with students taking charge of script writing, creating dance choreography, and designing props and costumes.

I wanted to remind whānau of some things for Monday and Tuesday’s performances next week.

  • All students are expected to attend all 3 shows and perform or participate in the production. Parents must drop their children to their child’s class at 5:15 pm on Monday and Tuesday nights and collect from their child’s class after the show has finished. No child will be allowed to leave unless a parent or other listed caregiver is there to collect. Each teacher will mark a roll for this.
  • Tickets for Monday and Tuesday nights are sold out. There are tickets left for the matinee.
  • You do not need to purchase a ticket for your child if they are performing in the show.
  • Please contact your child’s teacher if you are unsure about your child’s role in the production.

I want to in advance thank all our wonderful kaiako and tamariki for their efforts in creating an original and authentic production. A special mention to Laurie Rogers, Meg Waghorn, Megan O’Sullivan, and Jonny Mapuna for their work behind the scenes. Finally to Jamie Collings and Jamie McShane for their support with the staging, lighting and sound.

We invite all whānau to come along and support the Raumanuka Café, open weekdays from 8:15 am onwards out of the Dyer Street School Hall. Treat yourself to a hot drink while connecting with others in our school community. To keep this service running, we rely on your continued support. Your contributions help ensure the café remains a hub for our community, and we appreciate everyone who has helped make it a success.

Regarding enrolments for 2025, we would love to know if you intend to enrol your child next year at our kura. This helps us plan for a roll growth class and gives us the best opportunity to resource and support new tamariki coming in. You can enrol online through the school website or grab a paper copy from the office.

With Term 4 sports ahead, we are doing another run of Dyer Street School Sports tops. We will also offer buckets hats which aligns nicely with tamariki needing to wear hats in Terms 1 and 4. Please come to the office for sizing opportunities next week. All orders will need to be placed by Friday 20th September.

Finally, we have our annual quiz on Friday 20th September, this has nearly sold out and is a fun night out. Funds raised from the quiz will go towards supporting learning environments for our tamariki.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy “Atua News”

Ngā mihi

School Production – Week 9

You have likely already heard from your tamariki about our school production coming up in week 9. All classes and teachers have been busy working away on their class items.

The show is called Atua News and all classes will perform an item of their choosing – we have classes singing, dancing and performing plays.

We will have three performances:

  • Monday 16th of September 1 p.m.
  • Monday 16th of September 6:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday 17th of September 6:00 p.m.

Ideally, children will be available for all performances. If you know that your child will be unable to attend any of the performances please get in touch with your child’s teacher.

For the evening performances, children must be dropped off at their classroom at 5:15 p.m. Please send children with snacks and a drink bottle to eat in their class during the show.

Children can be collected from their classrooms following the show, they will need to be signed out by their teacher.

We will be asking for parent helpers to assist with supervising children in the classrooms during the shows, junior teachers in particular will need help with this. Parent helpers would be required from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the evening shows.

Children will need to have all their costume items at school on Monday.

Onesie Day – Supporting Wellington Free Ambulance

Thank you to all who supported our fundraising efforts for Wellington Free Ambulance.

We haven’t yet added up our cash donations but we broke our fundraising goal via our online page before even counting the coins so we were really successful.

You can still donate to our school page here: https://www.onesieday.co.nz/users/dyer-street-school-2

Room 5

Room 5 have been working hard on our production piece. Learning the song, learning about Ranginui (Sky Father) and the story about Ranginui and Papatuanuku.

Room 5 have also been doing a lot of learning about mahi ngatahi (working together) and welcoming our new tamariki. They are involved in manaakitanga (respect, kindness and caring) as they engage in drawing, building  and learning mathematical concepts of measurement.

Ka pai Room 5!

Room 4

Room four has spent the last couple of weeks prepping and hyping ourselves up for school production. We have choreographed dances, researched Atua, created props and enjoyed learning the Akoiti waiata.

We have learnt that Rongomatane is the Atua of peace and cultivated foods (ie. the kumara). He teaches us that it is important to look after our bodies much like we do our mara (gardens). To do this we need to provide water, shelter, and gentleness and occasionally pull any weeds that are affecting our growth.

We look forward to sharing what we have created with the Dyer Street whānau next week.
