We are now getting close to the middle of the Term 4. I have loved seeing the tamariki playing sports and enjoying the environment in their new school tops and DSS hats. We will be doing a final run of these next week, so if you need to order a sports top or hat this will be the last chance this year.

It’s been a few weeks now since our amazing school production “ Atua News”. If you would like access to our school production video, Atua News, please use this link, which will take you to a page where you can view or download it. This is a fantastic opportunity for whānau to revisit the performance and share it with friends and family who couldn’t attend the production. A huge thanks to Josh Hoffman for filming, editing, and creating this wonderful video for our kura. Your mahi is much appreciated Josh, and we’re thrilled to have this keepsake of a memorable event!  Use this Link here – Atua News Performance

At the beginning of 2025, Dyer Street School will officially adopt our new MANA values. In this year’s end-of-year report, students will reflect on their growth using the LEARN values. Additionally, at our Senior Prizegiving in December, we will be awarding the LEARN cups for the final time. As a staff, we felt it was important to honour our current school values, which have guided our Year 6 tamariki throughout their journey at DSS, while ensuring the groundwork is in place for a meaningful launch of our new MANA values. This thoughtful transition allows us to acknowledge our school’s legacy as we look forward to the future.

We have received our ERO report from the Ministry, and although it is still in the final stages of confirmation, I believe we can be proud of the positive narrative it reflects about our school. Once the report is officially published, I will share more about our approach to addressing the next steps and improvement priorities identified. These focus areas will be directly integrated into our 2025 strategic plan, ensuring that we build on our strengths while continuously enhancing our practices for the benefit of our students and school community.

Congratulations to our school athletics team for their outstanding performances, attitude, and effort at the Hutt Recreation Ground last Tuesday. It was a fantastic experience for our tamariki, and although some events were challenging, it has inspired many to train and strive for even better results in 2025. Ngā mihi to Kasey Ward for his excellent organisation of the event and to the parents who supported and cheered on our athletes. Your dedication and encouragement make a real difference, and we are proud of everyone who participated and represented our kura.

Have a wonderful weekend everybody

Ngā mihi nui

Room 9 & 10

Room 9 and 10 have been learning about World War Two this term in their Literacy time. They have been working hard on structuring a piece of writing which includes topics such as the causes of WW2, Blitzkrieg and The Battle of Britain. Room 9 and 10 were lucky to have a real editor, Kerryn Hewson, Anna’s mum, come in and teach the students about the writing process and how she writes her first draft and what the editing process looks like. In her first session, students gained a lot of knowledge and asked for her to come back and help/ inspire them more with their writing pieces.

Thank you to Mr Rogers for his expertise in WW2 and Matt Weldon-Smith for coming in and talking about your family history. Thank you also to the parents, who sent in either medals or presentations for your children to share with Room 9 and 10.

Here are a few excerpts from these sessions.

The causes of WW2 were the treaty of Versailles and the rise of Adolf Hitler. The Treaty of Versailles made Germany mad because they needed to pay lots of money because they were blamed for WW2 and they lost lots of soldiers. Then Hitler said “I will make Germany power again! So he did.

In 1939, the Germans had a very good tactic called Blitzkrieg. It was speed of movement, decision making and an over confident enemy. Germany took a lot of countries.

As the air raid siren went off we all ran for shelter. As we were running I couldn’t think about how hungry I was. I could only think about getting safety.

Sun Safety in Term 4 –

Please make sure to sunblock your children and ensure they have a wide-brimmed hat at school every day in term 4. If your child has any sensitivity to sunscreen please make sure teachers are aware and you provide an appropriate alternative as we do apply sunscreen at school at times.
