Kia ora e te whānau,

It’s been a real joy to see our tamariki getting out into our school environment and making the most of the fine weather over the last couple of weeks. The new soccer field has been an absolute hit with our tamariki with competitive games taking place most morning teas, and lunchtimes. Ngā mihi to our wonderful kaiako who have been supporting our children with their understanding of soccer, the rules, fairplay and general game strategy. It’s so pleasing to see the field being used and appreciated.  

We have just had notifcation that the Education Review Office ( ERO) will be starting work on our school evaluation cycle next term. The format for this process has changed. Over the next year, we will be working closely with ERO team to acknowledge our current strengths in practices and systems, while also working towards developing areas of need within our kura. I look forward to sharing our story with the ERO team and the next steps on this journey.

As part of 4.1 of our Strategic Plan under the identity pou, we are looking to review our school values. This has come from community voice in previous consultation, with the idea that we have values that are fit for purpose, relevant to our current needs, and are a vehicle that supports our vision of “enhancing the mana of all learners”. I will be sending a short survey out next week to all whānau asking you about what values are important for you and for us to instill in your children while at Dyer Street. After that, I will connect with our children and staff to get their voice before collating this together. Please check your emails next week for this. 

Finally, I want to acknowledge Alex Lee who is one of our amazing teacher aides at Dyer Street. Alex has been with us for nearly 3 years. He has made a significant difference for our children by fostering authentic relationships that help with their learning and behaviour. His caring and understanding approach is something we will miss. Alex is moving on to an Automotive Engineering course. We wish him all the best for this next chapter. 

A reminder that school is closed next Friday 29th March, Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd April. We will be back to school on Wednesday 3rd April.

Registration is now open for Basketball for Term 2. Please check out the notice on Skool Loop for how to register. 

Coming Up:

Year 5/6 Netball Registration:

These are ongoing competitions that run out of school hours each week. Details about when games are played will be sent with the registration form. These teams will need team managers who can support the teams at games.

Tough Guy/Gal challenge – specific date TBC. Due to a significant amount of interest we will enter as a school. We are waiting to hear back next steps from the event organisers. 

 

Congratulations to our students who completed the Weetbix Kiwi Kids Try-athlon over the weekend. They completed a 150m swim, 4km bike, 1.5km run. Ka mau te wehi!

 

Drop-off Safety

If you drop off children on the other side of the road and they cross the road unaccompanied please drop them near the crossings on either Dyer or Roberts Street. 

Dyer Street around the car park is not a safe place for children to cross and there have been some close calls recently with children running in front of vehicles. 

There are lots of safe and easy-to-access places to pull in down by the crossing or even in the Dyer Street culdesac. Children can then cross the crossing near the hall and walk down the path to the office or use the hall gate. 

 

Medicine Forms

Please ensure that if you have a child that requires any medicine at school their medicine forms are up to date. You can find the forms on our website under Enrolment: https://www.dyerstreet.school.nz/enrolment/

Movin’March – Week 6!

Remember if you walk or wheel we’ll tick off your trip and all entries are sent to Greater Wellington at the end of March (remember you only need at least one trip recorded on your “passport” to enter).  All passports in the WOW Passport Challenge go in the draw to win one of 6 x $400 MYRIDE vouchers.  We have spot prizes to give away too! 

Whānau Photo Competition

Post a pic and comment of your whānau having fun on your school journeys under our weekly theme on Facebook, or post and tag us (@movinmarch) on Facebook and be in to WIN 1 of 5 x Micro Scooters (excludes posting “Stories”)!  We’re also giving away 10 Family Passes to Staglands Wildlife Reserve or Zealandia. Check our Movin’March Facebook to see what whānau said about last week’s theme and look for week 4’s theme to be posted on Sunday.

Park & Stride:

If your family lives too far away, why not park a short distance away from the school gate and walk or wheel the rest of the way?  For more information see our Park & Stride tips or try parking on High Street, Thornycroft Ave or Oxford Terrace and using the paths and alleyways to get to the school.

Room 4

Room four has been looking at the things we value as individuals. These include aspects such as whānau, whenua, taonga and manaakitanga.

Over the past few weeks we have been learning the basics of our pepeha and through this the tamariki have been able to identify what is important to them as an individual.

Room 11

Ako Nui trip to Te Papa

First, we got to explore the bush city! We went across this really cool swing bridge, I was walking down some stairs when I found a glow worm cave! It was amazing there were these little blue specks on the roof of the cave.

After that, we got to go into this room called “Blood, Earth and Fire”. I found a movie theatre that had real movies playing on the screen. Then I saw this weird shipping container. I looked inside of it and found so many bugs they were hidden in little boxes.

Finally, we ended up in the dinosaur exhibit, most of the bones were cast from the real ones. The dinosaurs had been transported to Australia to America then to New Zealand. One of the bones was real, it even weighed over 360 kg and that was only a piece of the leg! Just imagine how much the full dinosaur would weigh!

In the end, I thought it was a great experience.
